Held at the university’s Thompson-Boling Arena, the surprise party was more than just a birthday bash. It was a tribute to Zeigler’s iconic journey from under-recruited high school prospect to one of the SEC’s most electrifying and beloved players. Players, coaches, fans, and even university staff came together to celebrate the heart and soul of the Vols.
“Zakai’s not just a player—he’s the heartbeat of this team,” head coach Rick Barnes said during a heartfelt speech. “His grit, leadership, and passion inspire everyone in this program.”
Zeigler, known for his speed, defensive intensity, and playmaking flair, has become a fan favorite in Knoxville. Beyond the court, he’s known for his resilience—facing family hardships and overcoming adversity with grace and humility. Tuesday’s celebration featured video tributes, a highlight reel of his best moments, and a massive cake shaped like a basketball court with his jersey number, 5, in the center.
Fellow teammates gifted him a custom pair of orange-and-white sneakers inscribed with motivational phrases he often shares in the locker room. Fans packed the arena, chanting his name and holding signs that read, “Zakai Forever” and “Vol for Life.”
