Are BYU and Utah Football Well‑Set for the Future Compared to Their Big 12 Peers?

Entering the 2025 Big 12 season, both BYU and Utah appear well-positioned for future success—albeit in different ways and with unique challenges.

According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, BYU and Utah ranked No. 25 and No. 30 respectively in his future power rankings—based on criteria like quarterback depth, coaching staff, roster management, and star power  . Among Big 12 teams, only four cracked the top 25, including BYU, marking the Cougars “well‑set” among their peers.

BYU is riding high. The Cougars went 11–2 last season (7–2 Big 12), closing with a decisive Alamo Bowl victory  . They enjoy remarkable coaching stability under Kalani Sitake, now entering his 10th season with primary coordinators returning  . Senior leaders like linebacker Jack Kelly, receiver Chase Roberts, and running back LJ Martin add notable star power. Meanwhile, recruiting remains solid—BYU’s 2026 class ranks about 20th nationally  .

Utah, meanwhile, had a disappointing 5–7 campaign in their first Big 12 season . Key questions linger around their QB room and coaching lineup. However, optimism exists: new starter Devon Dampier brings dual-threat capability, and a veteran offensive line returns intact  . Still, Utah slipped in Rittenberg’s rankings—from 14 to 30—due to offseason uncertainty  .

By comparison to other Big 12 teams, the Cougars’ stable staff and proven roster give them a clear strength edge. Utah’s upside lies in the trenches and emerging quarterback play—but concerns about coaching and health loom larger.

Bottom line: BYU seems firmly on track for sustained success in the Big 12. Utah has the raw pieces to bounce back—but must find consistency at quarterback and sideline leadership to keep pace with league contenders.
