In a move that has Cougar Nation buzzing, highly-touted legacy recruit Elijah Detmer — son of BYU legend and Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer — has officially committed to BYU, turning down offers from national powerhouses Oklahoma and Oregon.
The four-star quarterback out of Texas announced his decision via social media, donning a BYU hat with the caption, “Coming home. Go Cougs.” For BYU, this commitment is more than just landing a talented prospect — it’s about rekindling a rich family legacy that helped shape the program’s identity.
Detmer, a 6’2”, 200-pound QB, is known for his football IQ, pocket presence, and precision passing — much like his father, who threw for over 15,000 yards at BYU and won the Heisman in 1990. Elijah posted over 3,000 passing yards and 32 touchdowns last season, earning him offers from top-tier programs and national attention as one of the most cerebral QBs in the 2025 class.
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake couldn’t be more thrilled. “Elijah understands what it means to wear the Y,” he said. “He’s got the talent, but more importantly, he has the heart and leadership this program is built on.”
For Detmer, the choice was personal. “It’s where my roots are. I grew up dreaming about playing in Provo, and now I get to write my own chapter.”
