Panthers Veteran Clinging to Relevancy as Breakout Rookie Steals Spotlight
The Carolina Panthers are entering the 2025 season with renewed energy and a revamped roster — but not everyone is feeling the excitement. One longtime veteran is finding himself on the wrong end of the spotlight as a breakout rookie rises fast through the ranks.
Wide receiver Adam Thielen, who signed with Carolina in 2023 and was a key contributor early on, is now facing the reality of diminished snaps and a changing offensive identity. With the emergence of rookie wideout Jamari Brooks, a third-round pick out of TCU, Thielen’s role is shrinking as training camp rolls on.
Brooks has been electric. Known for his elite route-running and burst after the catch, the 22-year-old rookie has become quarterback Bryce Young’s go-to target during team drills. Coaches have praised his sharp understanding of the playbook and his natural chemistry with Young, calling him a “day-one impact player.”
Meanwhile, Thielen has been largely quiet. Though still reliable in short-yardage situations, his lack of separation and declining speed have become more noticeable — especially as the Panthers push toward a more vertical, fast-paced offense under new coordinator Tanner Engstrand.
“Adam’s a pro. He’s been helping the young guys and staying locked in,” said head coach Dave Canales. “But we’ve got competition everywhere. No one’s guaranteed anything.”
The writing may be on the wall. Thielen, now 34, is not only fighting for playing time — he could be fighting for a roster spot if the youth movement continues to surge.
It’s a storyline that plays out across the NFL each season: veterans giving way to the next wave. And in Carolina, the tide may be shifting faster than expected.
For Thielen, the challenge now is simple — prove there’s still something left in the tank.
